{"id":22,"date":"2017-01-24T19:46:40","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T19:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/home.physics.wisc.edu\/leverett\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2026-03-16T11:24:46","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T11:24:46","slug":"women-in-science","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/home.physics.wisc.edu\/leverett\/women-in-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in Science"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women in Science<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an incomplete listing of various resources for issues regarding women and girls in science (particularly in physics).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At UW-Madison:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/cuwip.physics.wisc.edu\">hosted<\/a> one of the regional APS Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) at the UW-Madison in January 2017! &nbsp;It was an amazing event with over 140 undergraduate participants from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa. Further details about the CUWiP series of meetings can be found at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aps.org\/programs\/women\/workshops\/cuwip.cfm\">APS CUWiP site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wiseli.engr.wisc.edu\/\">WISELI (Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute)<\/a><br>\nWISELI&nbsp;sponsors talks and events, studies issues of gender equality for women in science and engineering, and has funding opportunities such as the Celebrating Women in Science and Engineering Grant Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>General Resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;Oreal is an incredible supporter of women in science:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-more-space\">\n<li>L&#8217;Oreal has partnered with UNESCO to sponsor the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationloreal.com\/our-programs\/program-our-convictions\">For Women In Science<\/a> program, which yearly gives awards to five exceptional and established women scientists across a wide range of scientific fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>L&#8217;Oreal USA has partnered with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\">AAAS<\/a> to sponsor the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loreal.com\/en\/usa\/pages\/group\/fwis\/\">L&#8217;Oreal USA Fellowships for Women in Science program.<\/a>\u00a0 This wonderful program gives awards and support to five women postdoctoral researchers across a broad\u00a0range of scientific disciplines.\u00a0 (Yours truly was a recipient of this award in 2005!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some classic references:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-more-space\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beyond_Bias_and_Barriers\">Beyond Bias and Barriers: Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering <\/a>report of the National Academies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dual career issue (i.e. the two-body problem): \u00a0here is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/physics.wm.edu\/dualcareer.html\">famous study of McNeil and Sher<\/a>, which\u00a0includes many useful links, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/serc.carleton.edu\/NAGTWorkshops\/careerprep\/jobsearch\/dualcareer.html\">this site<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women in Science This is an incomplete listing of various resources for issues regarding women and girls in science (particularly in physics).
